Prepare to Be Amazed by the Inside of This Airplane Home

Bruce Campbell, a retired electrical engineer with a passion for creative projects, has redefined the meaning of home. At just 20 years old, he purchased 10 acres of forested land near Hillsboro, Oregon, for $23,000. At the time, he had no idea that this property would one day house one of the most unique homes in the world—a fully repurposed airplane turned into a stunning living space.

A Lifelong Passion for Innovation

Campbell has always been fascinated by taking things apart, understanding how they work, and finding new ways to repurpose them. Initially, he planned to construct a home using retired shipping containers, an idea that seemed groundbreaking at the time. However, upon learning that others had already explored this concept, he set his sights on an even more unique project.

About 20 years after purchasing his land, Campbell came across a story that completely changed his vision. He read about Joanne Ussery, a hairstylist from Mississippi who had lost her home in a fire. Rather than rebuilding a conventional house, she transformed a decommissioned Boeing 727 into a fully functional residence by a river. Inspired by her ingenuity, Campbell knew he had found his next project.

Turning a Dream into Reality

In 1999, Campbell took a bold step and purchased a retired Boeing 727 from Olympic Airways for $100,000. However, acquiring the aircraft was just the beginning. Since the plane was located in Athens, Greece, transporting it to Oregon proved to be an enormous challenge. The logistical costs alone amounted to an additional $120,000, bringing the total investment to $220,000.

Despite the hefty price tag and complicated transportation process, Campbell was confident in his vision. For him, this was not just about creating a home but about reimagining how unconventional materials could be repurposed in extraordinary ways.

The Transformation Process

Once the airplane arrived on his property, Campbell dedicated himself to converting it into a livable space while preserving much of its original structure. The result is nothing short of remarkable. The airplane home retains its futuristic design while offering the comfort and functionality of a traditional residence.

The interior features open, functional areas where passenger seating once was. The cockpit remains intact as a tribute to the aircraft’s history, while large windows flood the space with natural light, making it bright and inviting. Every detail reflects Campbell’s meticulous approach—combining practicality with an appreciation for engineering and design.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Beyond its uniqueness, Campbell’s airplane home stands as a testament to sustainability. By repurposing a retired aircraft, he has prevented a massive structure from being scrapped or abandoned. His project demonstrates how unconventional materials can be given new life, inspiring others to think outside the box when it comes to housing solutions.

Campbell firmly believes that retired airplanes represent an untapped resource in the housing industry. Their durable materials and structural integrity make them ideal candidates for repurposing, and his home is proof that these decommissioned machines can be transformed into something truly remarkable.

A Home That Captures the Imagination

Living in an airplane is more than just a personal passion project for Campbell—it’s a way to challenge conventional thinking. His home has attracted attention from people around the world, with many eager to see the transformation firsthand. He frequently welcomes curious visitors, sharing his journey and inspiring others to consider new possibilities for sustainable living.

While the process of converting the aircraft into a home was filled with logistical hurdles, Campbell finds immense satisfaction in the end result. His story is a powerful reminder that with vision and determination, even the most unconventional ideas can become reality.

A Legacy of Creativity and Innovation

Today, Campbell continues to reside in his airplane home, finding joy in its uniqueness and the inspiration it provides to others. His project serves as a symbol of ingenuity, proving that rethinking traditional living spaces can lead to extraordinary outcomes.

Bruce Campbell’s journey encourages all of us to look at the world differently, embrace creativity, and explore new ways to repurpose resources. His airplane home is not just a place to live—it’s a testament to innovation, sustainability, and the power of thinking outside the box.
