Bali, Indonesia, is known for its breathtaking beaches, rich traditions, and warm hospitality. It’s a slice of paradise for tourists. But if you look beyond the postcard-perfect views, there’s a crisis silently unfolding—thousands of stray dogs wander the streets every day. Many are starving, sick, or injured. Local authorities have struggled for years to manage the stray population, but the problem keeps growing. These animals live in heartbreaking conditions, often going unnoticed in the shadows of a vacation hotspot.
Thankfully, there are compassionate people who refuse to stand by. They choose to act, rescuing these helpless animals one by one. Among them is 26-year-old Rico Soegiarto, a Bali local who has become an unsung hero in the animal rescue community. One night, on his way home from work in Denpasar—the island’s capital—Rico saw something that stopped him in his tracks.
Lying in the middle of the road was a husky in critical condition. The dog was skin and bones—so malnourished that her ribs jutted through her thinning fur.
