The Truth Behind Her Husband’s Suspicious Behavior
Sandra couldn’t stop laughing as Janet shared the story of her foster son’s laundry disaster. But her laughter quickly died down when she noticed the disapproving looks from other diners in the upscale Mexican restaurant where she and her best friend were having lunch.
“The things we do for kids,” Janet chuckled. “You and Mark should consider fostering. It’s really rewarding.”
Sandra sighed, poking at the lime wedge on her plate of Carnitas. She doubted her ability to bond with a foster child, and her heart still ached from the fact that she and Mark couldn’t have children of their own.
“Isn’t that Mark over there?” Janet suddenly asked, breaking Sandra’s thoughts.
Sliding to the edge of the booth, Sandra peeked past the lush plants around their table. Sure enough, she spotted her husband walking through the dining room. She was about to wave when she saw him slide into the booth right behind them.
“I’m sorry I kept you waiting, sweetheart,” Mark said tenderly, taking the hand of a beautiful young woman and kissing her knuckles.
Sandra’s heart pounded in her chest. Was Mark… cheating on her?
“This doesn’t look like a business meeting,” Janet whispered beside her.
Tears welled up in Sandra’s eyes. After twenty years of marriage, was her husband really having an affair?
“But maybe I’m wrong,” Janet said, trying to sound optimistic. “Sometimes I have to flirt a little to get clients to open up. Maybe Mark is just doing the same.”
“No, we both know what’s going on, Janet,” Sandra hissed. She grabbed her fork and started to rise. “I’m going to march over there and—”
“Wait!” Janet pulled her back down. “You can’t just go over there and attack him, Sandy. This looks bad, but there might be a reasonable explanation.”
Sandra took a deep breath, trying to calm down. They moved to a spot where they could watch Mark and the woman without being seen. Sandra’s stomach churned as she saw them whispering and sitting close together, Mark’s arm around the woman.
When a waiter arrived, Mark lowered the menu to order drinks and even stole a bite of the woman’s appetizer.
“There could be an innocent explanation,” Janet murmured. “Maybe she’s his boss’s daughter, Amy?”
“Maybe. But if he’s cheating…” Sandra’s heart sank at the thought.
“We’ll get evidence first,” Janet said firmly. “And if he is, I know some great divorce lawyers.”
Later, Sandra and Janet asked their waitress about the couple at Mark’s table. The waitress confirmed they’d been there often and seemed cozy with each other. Sandra’s suspicions grew stronger.
The next day, following a plan they’d hatched, Sandra brought lunch to Mark’s office, hoping to catch a glimpse of Amy. But when she entered, she froze. The same woman from the restaurant was there, right next to Mark.
“Sandy!” Mark exclaimed, surprised. “What are you doing here?”
“I brought lunch,” Sandra replied, eyeing the woman. “Hello, I’m Sandra, Mark’s wife.”
The woman’s face lit up. “You’re Sandra? Mark’s told me so much about you. I’m Eliza, Mark’s—”
“Secretary!” Mark interrupted. “Eliza is my secretary. We were just working on a presentation for tonight’s event.”
Sandra wasn’t convinced. She was sure she’d seen Eliza somewhere before, but the young woman denied it.
As the conversation continued, Sandra noticed Eliza’s earrings. “Those are beautiful,” she commented.
“They were a gift from my fa—father,” Eliza stammered.
“Mark, you never mentioned your old secretary left,” Sandra said, still suspicious.
Mark explained that Eliza had replaced his previous secretary, who’d been promoted. He praised Eliza’s work, but Sandra’s mind was elsewhere. She kept thinking about those earrings.
Later, at home, Sandra was troubled by the discovery that the earrings were custom-made, matching a receipt Janet had found. The realization hit hard—Eliza had lied about where they came from.
That evening, Sandra and Janet decided to confront Mark at his launch event. Sneaking into the venue, they spotted Mark and Eliza together on stage. Unable to hold back her anger, Sandra hurled a champagne flute at Mark, accusing him of cheating in front of everyone.
Amidst the chaos, Mark desperately tried to explain. But it wasn’t until Sandra was about to leave that he dropped a bombshell: “She’s my daughter! Eliza isn’t my mistress, Sandra. She’s my daughter!”
Sandra was stunned. The resemblance was undeniable. Mark revealed he’d only recently learned about Eliza, the result of a one-night stand in college. He hadn’t told Sandra out of fear of hurting her.
Sandra’s anger shifted as she saw Eliza crying. Realizing the truth, she embraced Eliza, offering comfort. “None of this is your fault, Eliza,” she said softly.
As they hugged, Sandra knew things would never be the same. But now, at least, there were no more secrets.
